Google Books

What is the difference

Google Books/Google Scholar - What is the difference?

Both are large scale projects from Google.

Both are better searched in ADVANCED SEARCH MODE

Google Scholar

  • Is a search engine crawling academic publisher's websites, but it also searches Google Books [ indirectly] and link you to Google Books.
  • Google Scholar can be configured in settings to export the citation into Refworks and Link to AU Library Holdings
  • In Google Scholar the content focus is SCHOLARLY JOURNAL ARTICLES, although, in addition to Google Books,  other materials are increasingly being searched and included in the search results, e.g. dissertations, documents and reports.
  • Google Scholar also crawls across academic open access archives and open access journals, so it will deliver to you a link to full text content,  if available.
  • Google Scholar's main links, however, take you to the academic publisher's paywall.

Google Books

  • Is a search engine crawling across the scanned images of millions of books - the vast holdings of some of the largest libraries in the world.
  • The content focus is BOOKS, although other materials are increasingly being added such as dissertations, documents and reports.   Recently some journals and magazines have been included, though they may appear in full yearly volumes and are not easily separated.  This is NOT A JOURNAL ARCHIVE.
  • Google scholar cannot be configured to link to our AU electronic holdings, nor can you export citations automatically to Refworks.
  • Google Books does sell ebooks for some titles, but the intention is to open up - at least for now - all non-copyrighted content and make it available to the world.
  •  Copyrighted material may have view restrictions, but it is still often being searched.
