visual literacy initial search

we started with MEDLINE as a more medical approach, then switched over to (some) of the education-oriented databases with the phrase 'visual literacy' or visual fluency. this is not a comprehensive search- you might want to go back through some of the dissertations, ebook collections, etc to see if there are additional articles dealing with visual literacy and design thinking...

So far PsycINFO below

The terms: agility (not the development methodology but rather being nimble or flexible) + teams (work teams in the organizational setting) + developing
The Topic: I am trying to identify what research has been done on the topic of building agility in teams.
The second search I need is...
Terms: teams (work teams in organizations) + success factors/effectiveness

asynchronous Feb 16

These resources have been very helpful in narrowing down my interest. Can you setup three searches to help me narrow down my interests a little more?
1. Social media in research (I am particularly interested in the used of photographic images)
2. Graphic design in research (here I am thinking about things like logos, ad campaigns, billboard, brochures or even the use of the design process in research)
3. Are there any studies out there that used a visual research method (I don't care what type) in organizational studies. Such of the research I have is in the humanities or in a social justice cause. I am interested to see if there is something in org studies or a business setting.
These are not little searches, Dani, and you should make an appointment next week.   I have several questions that would change the direction of these searches, depending on what you answered.

I did a preliminary search again in PsycInfo on a slightly different bent , but I just need much more specifcity to make this work.

All these hold to the cc = 36*  class clode

asynchronous commun. Feb 2

I am not sure what you mean by this, Dani,  but yes --  many many students have used video and images in their dissertations  --  Multi-Media dissertations are quite common in our program.  In fact, we have won some international awards
http://aura.antioch.edu/mlphdlcuw/

Recent in this list are ..  Naomi Nightingale,  Tammy Stachowicz, Elize Lark .. oh so many..  explore ..
PsycINFO .. using the methodology class codes  [22] can cough up LOTS of stuff ..  just a little mini sample attached.. but until we know what specifically you are doing with the visuals - and which visuals .. e.g. photographs, videos etc..

I think you should start with some of the general books we have on the topic..  because I am afraid if I answer further, I cannot be specific enough

Here is the Sage Handbook of Visual Research Methods

We also have Visual Methods in Social Research in SRMO

Tons more .. does that help ?   We can talk

Hi Deb!
Are you aware of anyone that has used a visual research method for their dissertation? Or is there a way to do a search for dissertations by this method?

Explanation of how I returned and searched

You put it two ways.     Positive Psychology and Organizational change and teams
There was nothing at that intersection
So I just did positive psychology and oganizational change.
I put that in and sent you what I found, but it was mostly related to the leader
New approach.  So then I just said Positive Psychology in Workplace [ 36* class code]
and REMOVED the leaders as best I could
Then limited to studies and peer reviewed journals.   Here is what I found.
Notice I said Positive psychology two ways
positive w1 psychology or positive w1 organizational w1 scholarship

Dani's sets are saved from Psycinfo in EBsco .. Dani wil lmake my Ebsco account and I will figure how to transfer

At the end we decided that it might be most useful to look at Research on Business / Organizational Life cycles .. and stick with recent years.

Dani can eliminate what does not fit and then in CRR articulate what is in and what is out .. ???  to be continued

Dani..   You are on the right track with the International journal ..   I looked for a few lit. reviews.. but of course there are so many subthems .  I think the Grant article is a good place to begin.   Leaving for Italy ..  Thurs.   all appt slots filled.    No appts till July

I did a search for examples.. but to get at what you want ..  look for overviews .. lit revs. etc.   ..   I would start with paul Grant article below, but you need to go to the A-Z to get it ..

I attached the feed, but it does not work the same way ..  .. left a note on favorite articles page ..

NOLA Continued

Dani writes :

Once again, I am in need of your help. Attached is a paper I found related to the topic I want to cover on the NOL. The paper was written back in 1987. Is there away to do a search to find papers that have been written since then that reference this paper? I am particularly interested in papers that are related to Small Business Growth, Small Business Change and Small Business Leadership. Is this a search you can set up for me?
I used the Web of Science Database because this is constructed to specifically search forward citations.   This index answers the question .. who cited whom?  [but is not exhaustive in books] . the focus of the index is on peer reviewed journals.    71 cited your article.  That is heavy citation for any article.   The index goes on .. to to all forward generations.  In other words ..   If Baldwin cited Chesson,  then who cited Baldwin ?   As so it goes .. forward to the present.   There is the idea that every study  has a mini lit review which cites the pertinent studies upon which that study sits.   So the citing articles ..  even to the 10th forward  generation .. could all be about the same thing.   Of course that is not always the case, becuase studies might be about two different things  and where one article is citing it for one aspect of the topic, another might be citing it for an aspect not pertinent to your current topic.    Still it is a very fascinating tool..  some students say addictive.   BTW  Web of science refers to the "web of knowledge"  in the broad sense of the term "science"  - not test tubes.
I only did the first generation from your article, because there were so many and only you would know what works and what doesn't in forward generations.   I know that we have to come home to LEADERSHIP Theory in the NOL ..  ???
Here is the Web of Science PaGE  http://libguides.phd.antioch.edu/webofscience
Also on this page I put a box with an embedded video on how to to a cited reference search in Web of Science
The results are attached below.  This weekend I will be adding my appointments for May up until I leave for Italy in June .  Note I will be gone to Santa Barbara Residency for a week on the 12th of May
OK.. then .. you can start here and see what you think..   Please reply with all questions.

I'm testing the waters with a new idea for my NOLA that I talked over with Laurien. Do you think you can help me with a quick search? At this point I just want to get a board idea of what is out there and then I would like to set up time with you to refine it.

Here is what I am looking for, what literature is out there on small business leadership, and leading change in small business?

This inquiry is a qualitative comparative case study using a participant observer perspective presented in a scholarly personal narrative (Charmaz, 2006; Nash, 2004; Yin, 2009). The researcher draws inferences from experiences and interviews in an independent, family-owned business and from the study ofleadership styles at a Minnesota charter public school. Leadership themes and community relationships are explored to understand the characteristics that lead to and sustain success. Utilizing the business leadership theories of Collins (2001), the charter schoolleadership findings of Hamm (2008), and the researcher's life experience in a family-owned small business as a lens, common characteristics of small business and charter school leadership are discovered. Themes are identified that coalesce around passion, community engagement, and teambuilding as characteristics that lead to successful leadership in a small business and a charter public school. Using the themes as a base, community leaders identify future trends in charter school organizational structure andleadership. Leaders contemplating opening or redirecting a charter school can consider this comparison as they create their own leadership training and professional development. We reviewed the road map, talked about Ebooks, A-Z, We Deliver

Then we did a very small subject search on Leadership and Change [ or should I say very Large !!}  without alot of time for refinement, but more as an example of power searching.

Your really important databases will be PsycINFO and ABI/Inform..  probably through out the program

Attached is our foray into PsycINFO such as it is :)

Really looking forward to searching with you, Dani

Dani writes:

I'm specifically interested in organizational change. For example, Kodak is a classic example of inability to change causing their own decline. Companies that fail to embrace technology or emerging trends.
Another topic is, the impact of fear on leadership. Does a leaders personal fears impact how the organization embraces change? If so how does it show up?
Lastly, is there any work done on helping leaders identify and deals with their fears about change?
Dani..  As you can see I searched rather broadly.   Without you online with me  giving feedback - I chose to include some less on target.    I realize you are more concerned with the leader's resistance, reluctance, and/or fear of change.. than with the followers..   The cataloguing does not easily tease that out.   So some of those got rolled in.   The more general lit. reviews are there as well.   I realize that you perhaps need one or two.. but I am sending you 75 abstracts .. OYE !!  Get a cup of coffee, sit back and enjoy them generally and perhaps you will find the right ones ..  I expanded fear .. way out to attitude/emotions/ ambivalence.   I tried to stay on the side of the leader.

Since I have not even shown you around your page yet ..  nor showed you how to find things via the return link in each record.   I am probably going to have to talk to you Monday,  but go ahead and TRY to find and reply with all questions.
