Google Scholar Search

Google Scholar Pros - Cons - & Alternaive Academic Search Engines

  • Google Scholar is a SEARCH ENGINE, not a bibliographic index.
  • It crawls across publisher's websites
  • You get some control in ADVANCED SEARCH FORMAT [see box below]
  • Free text searching / Natural Language

Pros :

  • It is free !
  • Crawls open access institutional repositories** which hold Open ACCESS articles for download
  • Connects to Refworks
  • Currency - As soon as an article is posted to a publisher's website, it is discoverable.  No waiting for indexing.
  • Can be set up to export citations to Refworks [see below] - albeit without the DOIs.
  • Can be set up to link to our A-Z gateway to full text [see below] - and sometimes that works.
  • Create Alerts

Cons:

  • No controlled vocabulary [subject headings/descriptors]
  • Citation hits can be manipulated
  • What is included? What is not?  They won't say.
  • No true Set Search [ although Boolean [and/or/not] features.
  • Cannot export groups of citations
  • NO Digital Object Identifiers !!!!! :(

When I use Google Scholar the most :

  • Best for quick reference or discovering keywords.
  • Idea generation : When I can accept serendipitous discovery with Keywods.
  • complementing a power search.

Weakest for comprehensive scholarly searching, e.g. CRR
